The 16 Names of God

 

Elohim, "God", i.e., His power and might                                      

Gen 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

 

Ps. 19:1 - The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

 

El-ELyon, "The most high God"                                                     

Gen 14:17-20 - And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale. And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Is. 14:13-14 - For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Is. 40:28-31 - Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

                despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?

               

Jehovah (Yahweh), "The Lord," i.e., God's eternal nature   

Gen 2:4 - These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

 

Jehovah - Jireh, "The Lord will provide"                                      

Gen 22:13-14 - And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Jehovah - Maccaddeshem, "The Lord your sanctifier"        

Ex. 31:13 - Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Ex. 15:26 - And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

Is. 6:1-3 - In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Jehovah - Shalom, "The Lord is peace"                                                        

 

                Judges 6:24 -Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto

                this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

 

Jehovah - Shammah, "The Lord who is present"                      -

 

Ezek. 48:35 - It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that

day shall be, The LORD is there.

 

Jehovah - Tsidkenu, "The Lord our righteousness"                 -

Jer. 23:6 - In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
